Updated: Dec 14, 2020
Can you name Eight of your closest female friends and family? Who would be on that list? Best friends, sisters, aunts, moms, cousins, coworkers, you?
According to the American Thyroid Association, one of them will end up with developing a thyroid condition1. This butterfly shaped gland at the front of your throat is a gland that produces hormones critical for every single cell in your body and their metabolism. Specifically, it helps regulate
Central and peripheral nervous systems
Those who develop a thyroid condition will likely be diagnosed with either Hyperthyroidism (overactive), Hypothyroidism (underactive), Hashimoto’s (hypo-autoimmune) or Graves (hyper-autoimmune)2.
Symptoms of Thyroid conditions
Thyroid conditions can be easily misdiagnosed as the symptoms can come on gradually, overlooked or misdiagnosed as other issues. Listed below are some of the most common symptoms experienced.
How do you identify if you have a thyroid condition?
So, what can you do if you are concerned that you have a thyroid condition? Your first line of defense is to contact your doctor, describe your symptoms and request a thyroid function test. If possible, request your doctor to order a full panel test, one that includes TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine) and TPO (Thyroid antibodies). Other tests such as ultrasounds, nutritional levels (Vitamin D, Iron, Iodine, B12, etc) may also be beneficial tests.
You also have the opportunity to order labs for yourself. This is what I did to learn that I am one in those 8 women who will be affected by a thyroid condition. Yes, me...I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. Thankfully, I have Functional Medicine and Ayurveda experts to support me as I work to naturally reverse the autoimmune response.
