To Detox, or not to Detox....that is the question

What if Hamlet would have considered detoxing, would the ending of his story been different?
Have you been curious about detoxification, or just downright confused? Everyone seems to have a detox program that is the best thing ever! Juice cleanses, group detoxes, liver cleanses, fasting, colon cleanses, powdered drink mixes, and more! I’m sure you can add a few more to this list. Then there is Ayurveda and their cleanses….especially the mystery of PanchaKarma!
What is a person to do??? How do you know if a detox program is right for you? Are you ready? Let me help with three insights.
First: We are (or SHOULD BE) detoxifying all the time.
We are detoxifying every day, at every moment, with every breath. Simply put, our 5 organs of detox; the skin, lungs, kidney, colon and liver are functioning constantly to take the the metabolic waste from food, air and fluids we consume and help remove the unused materials and waste from our body. This happens through our Breath (exhale), Sweat, Urine and Feces.
When we have balance in our digestion, daily routines, thoughts and actions, our detoxification should keep up without building up toxins. However, daily life and ingestion of chemicals, poor digestion are just a few examples of how we may be building up toxins faster than we can remove them.
Second: Detoxification should be gentle and kind to your body and mind.
As mentioned in point one, our bodies are designed with a built-in detoxification system. Instead of working against this system, ayurveda’s protocols embrace it, in a kind and gentle way. It should never leave you depleted or distressed.
A proper detoxification program should not leave you feeling starved throughout, with digestive issues, skin rashes, headaches, aches, pains or any other distressed change in your physiology. Instead, the experience should leave you feeling clean, light and refreshed.
Third: Preparing for a detox is as important as the detox.
One of my dear teachers, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, always taught that we need to detox through three ways…..1) Stop taking in toxins 2) Remove toxins from your body/mind and 3) Repair from the damages of the toxins.
